Everything is bigger in Texas
Tex Cohen lived in - you guessed it, Texas. One day, he bought a round of drinks for everyone in the pub because his wife Honeysuckle had just given birth to "a typical Texas baby boy weighing 20 pounds."
Everyone in the pub congratulated him and many told him that they found it hard to believe that his baby weighed in so heavy.
But Tex assured them, "It’s true, it’s really true."
When Tex came back to the same pub three weeks later, the barman said to him, "Say, you're the father of the typical Texas baby that weighed 20 pounds at birth aren’t you? So tell us, how much does your baby weigh now?"
Tex proudly replied, "Twelve pounds."
The barman could not understand this, so he asked Tex, "Why? Is he ill? What happened? He weighed 20 pounds at birth, why has he lost so much weight?"
Tex took a big swig from his beer, wiped his lips with the back of his hand, leaned into the barman and proudly replied, "Had him circumcised."

Shaarey Zedek to become associated with Shaar Hashomayim
To the members of Shaarey Zedek:
The Board of Directors of Congregation Shaarey Zedek have met a few times with members of the Shaar Hashomayim board to work out how to bring both shuls together.
The Board has decided to have a trial period during which time Shaarey Zedek members will go upstairs to Daven together with the Shaar members. If all goes well, then we will maintain our association with the Shaar.
An association is where members of both shuls come together for a common purpose; however, we still maintain our own entity in regards to our own financial status. We are currently paying a rental fee for use of the Chapel, so that money for the year will be given to the Shaar as a block fee. That means that all members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek will become members of the Shaar as well, and whatever dues a person has been paying will be grandfathered in for the future.
The pros of this association are as follows:
- Not having to wait for a Minyan
- Bringing the community together
- Cemetery rates for Shaarey Zedek members will no longer be higher than for Shaar members
After the trial period, if the members of either shul are not happy and do not want to continue this association, then we are not BOUND to any deal and we can walk away.
As your Rabbi, I truly believe this can enhance both shuls. The board and I encourage everyone to please come and let us know any concerns you might have.
The Shaarey Zedek Board and Rabbi Galperin
A note from the webmaster:
This combined minyan will begin with Shabbat services on February 20, 2016. Please note that services will commence at 9:15AM instead of 9:30AM.
