Another successful menorah lighting at Devonshire Mall
This year's menorah lighting at Devonshire Mall drew a tremendous crowd, with standing-room only, to witness the Chief of Police, Al Frederick, light the "helper candle" on the menorah. And, in keeping with the spirit of this year's charity, Camp Brombal - a summer camp for underprivileged children - all the remaining candles were lit by children who had gathered for the event.
It's not too late to donate to the Camp Brombal fund, so if you can help, please do!
In case you missed it, here is a video of the ceremony from earlier today.
Important Notice
Members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek will resume davening in the Chapel, beginning with this shabbat's services. Please note, as a result, our start time will go back to 9:30AM on Shabbat mornings.
Shaarey Zedek to become associated with Shaar Hashomayim
To the members of Shaarey Zedek:
The Board of Directors of Congregation Shaarey Zedek have met a few times with members of the Shaar Hashomayim board to work out how to bring both shuls together.
The Board has decided to have a trial period during which time Shaarey Zedek members will go upstairs to Daven together with the Shaar members. If all goes well, then we will maintain our association with the Shaar.
An association is where members of both shuls come together for a common purpose; however, we still maintain our own entity in regards to our own financial status. We are currently paying a rental fee for use of the Chapel, so that money for the year will be given to the Shaar as a block fee. That means that all members of Congregation Shaarey Zedek will become members of the Shaar as well, and whatever dues a person has been paying will be grandfathered in for the future.
The pros of this association are as follows:
- Not having to wait for a Minyan
- Bringing the community together
- Cemetery rates for Shaarey Zedek members will no longer be higher than for Shaar members
After the trial period, if the members of either shul are not happy and do not want to continue this association, then we are not BOUND to any deal and we can walk away.
As your Rabbi, I truly believe this can enhance both shuls. The board and I encourage everyone to please come and let us know any concerns you might have.
Signed:
The Shaarey Zedek Board and Rabbi Galperin
A note from the webmaster:
