Yes, we can!
The Jewish community of Windsor made life a little easier for the hungry and unemployed when Rabbi Galperin spearheaded a campaign to build a giant menorah out of donated food cans. While the first annual giant menorah lighting last year at Devonshire Mall was historic, this second lighting was much more important in terms of the good it did for the unemployed in Windsor.
The final tally is in! There were nearly 5,600 cans of food collected for the Unemployed Help Centre, totaling more than 12,300 pounds of food! Mazel tov to all involved in the planning and collection of the cans.
Here are some links to videos taken at the event. I hope you enjoy them. By the way, if you click on the symbol at the bottom right of each video, you can see the movie full screen - you don't need to be limited to the size of the small video window!
The first video features Rabbi Galperin's opening remarks, including the reading of a proclamation from the Windsor City Council.
The next video features Vincent Massey Secondary School teacher Vanessa Plourde's remarks.
The next video features Vincent Massey Secondary School students lighting the helper candle of the menorah.
The final video shows members of the community who lit the candles.
Laugh a little
You've heard the saying: "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy". Well, it's true, and as we approach the holiday season, your site Administrator (named "Jack" for those of you who don't know), has decided to add a pinch of spice to this website.
Beginning today, a new feature has been added. It's called "Laugh a little" and you can find it at the bottom of the "Main Menu" to the left. Each Wednesday, a new joke will be featured. I'll try not to use jokes that might be too provocative; after all, this is supposed to be a family-friendly site.
Please, if you don't have a sense of humour, don't bother checking it out - but if you do, I hope you enjoy it.
Can Menorah Drive in Full Swing
We've made a great start, but there's still a long way to go to get enough food cans to build a giant menorah at Devonshire Mall. Once the menorah is built, the cans of food will be donated to the Windsor Unemployment Help Centre, where they will be used to help feed Windsor's needy.
Join us at 4:00PM on December 6, 2010 at the Devonshire Mall for the official lighting of the Giant Menorah. Click here, or on the picture of the flyer below to get your own printable copy of the invitation.
